Where dreams come true.

Disney may think it’s cornered the market on that phrase, but something that I’ve been dreaming about for a while with my friend Shirley of Housepitality Deisgns came true yesterday.

We opened a booth together at Melville Trading Company, a charming home decor and antique store in downtown Mebane, N.C.

Coming Soon Capricorn Lane

We’ve christened our joint venture, “Capricorn Lane.” (You can read the story behind the name here.)

Our friend Suzy, from the blog Worthing Court, drove an hour to help us haul furniture, hang things and accessorize. I never knew how handy Suzy was until I saw her handle a drill gun!

I love how the booth turned out, and I think the most difficult part of this venture will be not spending my profits on the treasures Shirley has for sale.

I’m going to shut up — mostly — and let you look at some photos now.

I apologize for the shadows in some of the photos — the lighting inside the old building was difficult for an amateur photographer like me to work with. And for some reason, I failed to get a shot of the whole booth, but you can see that over at Shirley’s blog, Housepitality Designs.

Now for some vignettes:

Vintage Rocking Horse & Red Writing Desk

I painted this large writing desk with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Tricycle. Love that color!

wooden letters MADE it

We made it!

Wood. Zinc. Iron Finials. Just a few of the lovelies in our booth.

Red Football Butter Churn

This vintage “red football” Dazey butter churn is going to look great in someone’s kitchen.

Salesman Sample Queen Cast Iron Stove

Speaking of kitchens, could you imagine cooking on one of these? I couldn’t, but I do like the cast iron Queen stove salesman’s sample.

Vintage Graphic Pig Cutting Board

This little piggy went to market…

Milk Paint Secretary

This is milk paint in all its chippy glory. There’s quite a story to this secretary, and I promise I’ll share it later this week.

Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint Ironstone and Shutter Gray Secretary

For now, here’s more chippiness. Chippiness=happiness.

antique child's rocking horse toy

Shirley’s antique wooden rocking horse child’s toy is gorgeous!

Vintage linens in vintage laundry basket

Linens anyone?
vintage wooden school desk with drawer

Why don’t they make school desks like this anymore? (Hmm, wonder how that would look in Jackson’s room?)

faux mercury glass mirror and vintage painted metal mailbox

Now, I know this isn’t the best photo to end on, but it’s significant.

Do you see that old metal mailbox hanging below the faux mercury glass mirror I made from an old window? That was our very first sale!

We were absolutely giddy — couldn’t stop grinning, giddy — when a shopper called her friend over to look at it.

“I like this,” she said. And then she took it off the wall and started talking about how she could use it. For her dish towels in the kitchen. For her remote controls in the living room. (I’d thought it would make a nice planter, now that it’s mail collecting days are over.)

Of course, she bought it!

To that woman who could see the possibilities in an old flaky, but oh so charming, metal mailbox, thank you. Thank you for the vote of confidence. Thank you for my first sale. Thank you for giving me a story to tell. Thank you for stretching my imagination. Thank you for helping make my dream come true.

If you’re ever in Mebane, N.C., I hope you’ll come visit Capricorn Lane, Booth #24, at Melville Trading Company.

Downtown Mebane is certainly worth a day trip. So many great places to shop in the quaint downtown area.

Melville Trading Company is at 137 W. Clay St. in Mebane, N.C. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

(For those of you who live in the Greensboro area, I still have a booth at Golden Antiques & Treasures.)
